Peter Adams attended Highbury Preparatory School then Northlands Boys’ High School where he was Dux and Captained the tennis team. He then joined Adams and Co. – the family bookselling and stationery business – at the conclusion of his B.A. degree at University of Natal in 1967. He continued his studies part time and earned a B.Com degree also through University of Natal.
After working in the general bookselling field for a few years, he worked in leading British bookshops focusing on both the general and academic fields for almost a year and returned to work in the academic bookselling field in Durban. After his father’s death he took over the reins at Adams and Company and expanded the number of shops. Adams now has shops in central Durban and on UKZN Campuses, in Pietermaritzburg and in Johannesburg. Serving the students and readers of Durban while looking after his staff and shareholders has been his abiding mission
Peter Adams served on the national executive of the South African Booksellers Association for many years and was Chairman of the KZN branch of the organisation for some time.
He has a wife, who studied fashion design at DUT, and four children, all now pursuing their own careers.
His sporting recreations have included tennis, squash (where he served on the committee of the D and D Squash Association), golf, cycling and hiking. Add to those a general interest in the outdoor world, and reading of course! He has had the pleasure of meeting many interesting authors and over the years and has enjoyed helping them promote their books.
